Pipe-Si-Cana Games this weekend

This week will be a busy time in Moosomin, with several major events coming up over the next few days.

Chamber of Commerce members will kick off the Christmas shopping season with Moonlight Madness this Wednesday, the CP Holiday Train will visit Moosomin for a performance Friday, the Chamber will offer Santa photos and a free movie Saturday, and the Pipe-Si-Cana Regional Winter Games are set for this weekend.

Moonlight Madness Wednesday, December 3
The Chamber of Commerce is planning its Moonlight Madness for Wednesday, December 3.

Stores will be open until 9 p.m., and the Chamber of Commerce will be running a cash card draw.

People can pick up a cash card with a purchase at a participating business, have their card stamped with purchases at a few more businesses, and enter to win $250 or $100 in Moosomin Bucks.

The Co-op mascot Cooper will be going around town with a Santa sack full of offers and coupons from local businesses, and GX94 will be broadcasting live on location from four businesses from 3-7 p.m. and will be taking entries for its Licence to Chill contest, giving away a new Polaris sled.

At the end of the four hours, one name will be drawn from the Moosomin entries to go in the final draw for the sled, to be made Dec. 22.

CP Holiday Train - Friday, December 5
On Friday, Dec. 5 the CP Holiday Train will be stopping in Moosomin at 10:45 a.m.

There will be entertainment by Canadian alt-rockers The Odds (if you haven’t heard of them, you’ve heard their music as the Corner Gas credits rolled) and blues singer Roxanne Potvin.

The Odds achieved wide commercial success in the 1990s. Most recently, Odds got together and performed old and new songs on the Barenaked Ladies’ Ships and Dip cruise. A new CD, Cheerleader, was released in 2008.

The band’s first single, “My Happy Place,” was used during the end credits for Corner Gas.

Roxanne Potvin, the Juno award nominated Montreal based singer-songwriter, has a blues, soul and R&B background which has seen her work with luminaries such as Colin Linden, John Hiatt and Bruce Cockburn.

The Holiday Train has stopped in Moosomin only once before. The last visit by the Holiday Train, two years ago, attracted hundreds of people from the area, despite icy temperatures.

The CP Holiday Train left Montreal Thursday. The Moosomin stop Friday morning is one of many stops across the country before the train completes its journey December 18 in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia.

Donations for the Moosomin Food Bank will be accepted at the Moosomin stop, and hot chocolate will be served courtesy of Borderland Co-op and Conexus Credit Union. There will be a presentation to the Moosomin Food Bank from Canadian Pacific.

Santa Day December 6
The Chamber’s Santa Day is coming up on Saturday, Dec. 6. The Kinettes will be running Santa’s visit, complete with photos with Santa in his sleigh at Celebration Ford’s new location from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Digital photos will be provided for $10 each.

The Chamber will sponsor a free matinee performance of Disney’s Big Hero 6 at the Moosomin Community Theatre at 2 p.m.

Children attending the movie will receive a free popcorn, courtesy of the Moosomin Community Theatre.

Pipe-Si-Cana Regional Winter Games Dec. 6-7
Moosomin Recreation Director Mike Schwean has been working hard on plans for the Pipe-Si-Cana Games for months now.

The Pipe-Si-Cana Regional Winter Games are set for Saturday, December 6 and Sunday, December 7.

Hundreds of people from throughout the region will be coming to Moosomin for what is hoped to be the first of a new annual tradition.
