Suspect in custody in Portage after armed robbery

At approximately 6:00 pm Tuesday, RCMP arrested the male suspect in an armed robbery just east of Portage la Prairie off Highway 1. During the course of the arrest, the suspect was shot. He has been transported to Winnipeg hospital with non-life threatening injuries

The Independent Investigation Unit will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest and the injury.

Portage la Prairie RCMP had responded to a report of a stolen vehicle entering their detachment area. Initial reports indicated that there were multiple firearms inside the vehicle.

The vehicle was brought to a stop at Panko’s Food Store, where 2 females were brought into custody; 1 male fled on foot, reportedly armed with a long gun.

Portage la Prairie RCMP, along with neighbouring detachments, Searched for the man, and asked that all residents in the area remain inside their homes Tuesday afternoon and call in any suspicious activity.

Portage schools were in lockdown for the safety of the children while the subject was at large
