The RCMP believes a fire that destroyed historic buildings in Virden’s downtown was deliberately set.

Police are seeking the public’s assistance in solving the arson.

On Saturday at 5:45 a.m., Virden RCMP responded to the structure fire on Seventh Avenue.

The fire began in one building and spread to a neighbouring building with two storefronts, before the blaze was brought under control.

Damage is estimated at $2 million, according to the Office of the Fire Commissioner. Anyone with information is asked to contact Virden RCMP at 204-748-2046 or call Manitoba Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

Westman RCMP, Brandon Major Crimes Unit and the Office of the Fire Commissioner are investigating.

Firefighters initially went to the same electronics store where the Saturday fire started the previous night because of a small blaze in an electrical amp. It was extinguished outside the building.

On Sunday, the day after the downtown buildings burned to the ground, another fire destroyed a hundred year old school just outside Virden
