It is with heavy hearts that Murray, Alex and Brian Gray and our families announce the passing of Ruth Josephine Gray, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who passed away January 9, 2019 in the Southeast Integrated Care Center in Moosomin with her family at her side.

Ruth was born January 13, 1938 in Guelph, Ontario. She was the third child and first daughter of Lancelot and Elsie Cheyne and she grew up on a farm in Erin Township. She married her life-long companion Daniel Gray on August 18, 1956 and together they raised their three sons. In the spring of 1973, the family moved west to a mixed farm north of Maryfield, Sask. In 1999, Dan and Ruth retired to Maryfield and in 2016, they moved to their final home at the Pipestone Villas in Moosomin, Sask.

Our mother often shared memories from her youth. She used them to gently communicate the lessons she had learned and wanted to teach us (and through us, future generations) about what was truly important in life. That hardship can be overcome; that family, friends and relationships are of far greater value than material things; and that through everyday kindnesses and acts of service we can bring meaning to life and make a lasting difference in the world.

She conveyed her love via thoughtful encouragement, a ready-to-listen ear, and ever-present banana cake, butter tarts, cookies, biscuits, and pies. Many of her recipes are now favorites across the generations who learned how to bake at Gramma’s elbow. Continuing to enjoy her recipes together will bring back memories of fun times, her warm smiles and hugs, and laughter shared.

Ruth was an active member in her places of worship both in Ontario and in the Maryfield St. Andrew’s Church where she served as choir member and director for 38 years. Ruth served as Chair person of the Maryfield Housing Authority for eight years and provided hands-on leadership for innumerable fowl suppers and luncheons.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband Daniel, parents Lancelot and Elsie Cheyne, and her brother Robert Cheyne. She is mourned and lovingly remembered by her sons Murray (Marion), Alex (Heather), and Brian (Lori), nine grandchildren and their spouses, six great-grandchildren, her brother Jim Cheyne (Jean), sister Emily Leland (Robert), sister-in-law Arlene Cheyne, brother-in-law Wallace Gray (Margaret Ann) as well as many nieces and nephews.

Donations in memory of Ruth can be made to the Moosomin and District Health Care Foundation at P.O. Box 1470, or the St. Andrew’s United Church in Maryfield, Sask.
