Betty Wanona Carlson of Calgary, Alta., passed away peacefully May 18, 2019 at the age of 87, surrounded by her family, after a brief illness though her health was declining over the past two years, Betty maintained her independence, living in her own home and enjoying family and friends.

Betty was born September 9, 1931 in Fairlight, Sask., to Herbert and Etha Longman, but grew up in Maryfield, Sask., where she met and married Melvin Carlson in 1953.

Betty and Mel first resided in Edmonton before moving to Toronto in 1956 where they raised their family, made lifelong friends, developed a love for cottage country and actively participated in curling and bridge.
In 1975 the Carlson family moved to Calgary, establishing a new home and cottage life, passing on their values of tradition and family to their children and grandchildren.

Betty was always the connecter from generation to generation; from family to friend. Betty’s most important role in life was that of wife and mother, passing down her Saskatchewan small town values with her unconditional love and support of family and friends. Betty will be remembered as a kind and gentle soul, always thinking of others first. She enjoyed nothing better than sitting by a blazing bonfire sharing stories with those most important to her.

Holding her memory dear are sons John Carlson (Pam Carlson, Suzanne Boyd), Terry Carlson (Diane Haaland); daughters Sandra Carlson (Phil Robart) and Patricia Voncina (Gary Voncina); and grandchildren Bryce and Joshua Carlson, Katie and Mackenzie Robart and Georgia, Shanelle and Jade Voncina.

Betty was predeceased by her husband Mel, in 2005 and her daughter-in-law Mary Beth Carlson in 2013.

A memorial service will be held at Mcinnis & Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, Alta.), on Friday, June 21, 2019 at 3 pm. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

The family wishes to express our deepest appreciation for the wonderful staff at the Foothills Medical Centre Emergency department and Special Services Unit 36 who helped Mom pass onto her next journey and provided comfort and support to her and her family as we shared her last few days.

In living memory of Betty Carlson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McInnis and Holloway Funeral Homes, Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, Alta. T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
