A fundraiser for Sandra Youngblut will be held at the Moosomin Legion this Wednesday, August 28. There will be lunch served and a silent auction. All proceeds will go toward covering medical costs for Sandra, who has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Donna Lafleur, an executive member of the Moosomin Legion, explains the fundraiser.

“We are having a soup and sandwich this Wednesday from 11 am til 1:30 pm. The silent auction items will be at the Co-op Home Center for three days, from August 25 until 28. Then, we will move it to the Legion at 11 am on Wednesday, August 28 for the soup and sandwich lunch. All bids close at 1:30 pm on Wednesday at the Legion.”

Lafleur says Sandra has volunteered her time at the Legion for many years.

“Sandra was diagnosed with breast cancer and she has been a member who volunteered at the Legion for 22 years. Her husband, Dennis just retired, but now he has actually gone back to work so they can financially afford the medical trips and costs. They really need the help. Sandra has done 22 years of volunteering for us so we think that is the least thing we can do for her.”

She says Sandra has had to make trips to bigger centres for medical appointments.

“They have made a trip to Saskatoon, Regina, Yorkton, they’re making two trips this week. She has scans, bone density testing, and ultrasounds,. They’re going through a lot of the testing right now. They will hopefully find out Wednesday what the prognosis is, and they are planning on making it to the soup and sandwich that day as well.”

Lafleur says the fundraiser was planned very quickly to help support Sandra as quickly as possible. “She just found out about two weeks ago. It was very fast. As soon as we found out we knew we had to do something for them. This is the quickest thing we can do in a short period of time. With our soup and sandwich 90 per cent of our stuff is donated, our Legion members donate everything so there is no cost. All of the money goes straight to them.”

She says they are open to donations for the silent auction. “We decided the silent auction would bring extra money too, and thought we don’t want to ask for donations, we don’t want to canvas the businesses for donations, we just put it out there on our media page and on our posters letting everyone know if they want to donate, we will accept donations. We are not publicizing who donated what, the only ones who will know who donated will be Sandra and Dennis.”

Lafleur says the Legion hopes to raise $2,000 from the fundraiser. “We are hoping to at least be able to give them a couple thousand dollars to cover the medical costs. They have a friend’s place they can stay at in Regina to help save on hotel costs, but if they have to go to Saskatoon they will need a hotel room and it is more on travel cost and meals as well. Whatever they can do in Regina they’re hoping to do. We are hoping for around $2,000 to be able to give them.”

She says it feels good to help a fellow Legion member.

“It feels wonderful to help. With being all volunteers it is nice to get together and help, she is part of our volunteer service so it is nice to help a fellow member and a fellow volunteer.”

“They need the financial support and it is nice as a Legion to be able to support the people that support us,” Lafleur said. “She has volunteered for 22 years, it is the least we can do to help her out.”

Lafleur says Sandra is a kind and hardworking volunteer and person.

“Sandra would give you the shirt off her back. She is the kindest, most polite person, hardworking, she would work full-time and then come and donate her time to help make meals at nights. She is a go-getter, a super hard worker.”

You can donate to help Sandra through e-transfers if you are unable to attend the fundraiser on August 28.

“If anyone away from Moosomin wants to donate they can send cash donations,” Lafleur said. “They can be sent by e-transfer to my phone number 306-434-9340. Please make the password, Legion if you’re e-transferring.”
