At the Moosomin town council meeting on September 10, Mayor Murray Gray told council that a grand opening for the new water treatment plan is being planned for Thursday, September 25 at 11 am. Gray said he was working on the planning for the event.
“I think it’s pretty important that we celebrate a big win like that,” he told council.
Gray said he would be inviting both the current council and the previous council who spent years working on the water treatment project which got underway in 2017, as well as the engineers and contractors who worked on it, and the town crew and town office staff who have all spent lots of time working to get the project online.
Gray said the grand opening would consist of an approximately 30-minute program with some speeches, however planning is still ongoing. Council said they were happy to have Gray planning the event.
First reading of zoning bylaw amendment for UFA card lock
The town gave first reading to a zoning bylaw amendment to rezone land at 1814 Celebration Drive to accommodate a UFA cardlock and bulk fuel facility at that location. The land needs to be rezoned from commercial to industrial in order to accommodate the cardlock.
The first reading means that the zoning bylaw amendment is made public, with a public hearing taking place on October 8 at 7 pm at the town office, and written submissions accepted until October 3.
Councillor Kyla Fingas said she wanted it recorded that she was opposed to the zoning bylaw amendment. “To be clear, I want UFA here, I just don’t want to rezone,” she said. She said she didn’t think it was fair to the other businesses in that area of town who bought property and built there knowing that it was zoned commercial.
Town chooses option for service to Broadway lots
The town was presented with four options from MPE Engineering to provide sewer service to five lots on the east side of Broadway Avenue. The lots, where Westwind Greenhouse used to be, are owned by the Crossons who would like to sell them for residential development, however the lack of sewer service there has hindered sales of the property.
At an earlier meeting, the town sat down with the Crossons and realtor Kim Setrum to discuss servicing the lots. Due to the amount of services in the ditch and the slope of the road, the only way to service the lots would be to put sewer down the centre of the street and cut through the pavement.
At their meeting on Wednesday, the town chose one of the options presented by MPE for servicing the lots and will cover the cost of servicing the lots as development proceeds, with the land owner covering the cost of repairing the street.
The cost to the town would be $182,412 and the cost to the land owner would be $167,640.
