On December 26, at approximately 9:30 am, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a suspicious person in the backyard of a residence located on Wilkinson Crescent in the city of Portage la Prairie. An officer responded and located the 40-year-old female now walking on Crescent Road East.

The officer who approached the female, and immediately observed that she was not dressed appropriately for the cold weather and that she may be under the influence of a drug, attempted to ascertain if she needed assistance. The female was not able to properly respond to questions asked of her or identify herself to him. As she attempted to flee, she stumbled and fell to the ground.

The female was placed under arrest but resisted as the officer attempted to gain control of her. During the arrest, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his right thigh and realized he had been stabbed. The officer was able to gain control of the female and during the search, located a capped needle and a large homemade knife which had been tucked into her waistband.

Other officers arrived on scene to provide assistance and took the female into custody whereas the officer then drove himself to the hospital where he was treated and released.

The female remains in police custody at this time and will face charges of Assaulting a Police Officer, Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose.

Portage la Prairie RCMP continue to investigate.
