Children’s Author Brenda Redman of Esterhazy recently published her second book—Silly Willy Christmas.

The book is about hilarious holiday activities of a big extended family at Christmas, and emphasizes the importance of multigenerational connections.

Redman said she was inspired to write the book when she found out she was expecting her second grandchild.

“This was my second book that I’ve written. It was inspired when my daughter became pregnant with her second child and she was due around Christmas time,” said Redman.

“I’ve always wanted to write a Christmas story. I thought let’s try to do it and incorporate the new grandchild into the Christmas story, and see how it goes.”

Redman held a book signing at the Whipple Tree in Esterhazy on Oct. 15. Her book is 24 pages long and is illustrated by Wendi Nordell.

“I think families are always looking for that special Christmas story around Christmas time or something different to read at Christmas time,” she said.

“This book is different, it’s silly, and it does show lots of pictures at a family gathering, lots of eating and napping.

“It includes all those questions kids ask about where I’m going to sleep, what grandma is going to cook. I just took all of that and in one afternoon I was able to write a silly little Christmas book. It was fun.”

Redman’s first book— How’s Peanut—came out a few years ago. The book is about a grandma and mom-to-be sharing how babies grow before they’re born, with comparisons of vegetables and fruits to representations of babies in utero.

“Writing this book, I went through the same process for when I wrote my first book How’s Peanut?” she said.

“I used the same publisher, I used the same illustrator, the same company.

“The funnest part is doing the pictures and my illustrator, Wendi Nordell from Alberta, her and I just click. We sit down and go page-by-page, I give her my ideas and my silly little visions, she pencils them in and sends them to me. Then she paints them and from there she sends them over to the publisher. It’s pretty cool.”

Redman was asked if she plans on writing more books in the future.

“I have started another one and I always just say, we’ll see how it goes,” she said.

“I’m going to put all my focus and attention on promoting How’s Peanut? and Silly Willy Christmas, and we’ll go from there.”

She said she is excited to share the book with others.

“I’m all about repetition, fun and silliness, and I think I portray that quite well in both books,” said Redman.

“It’s fun writing, of course Christmas is all about family to me and that is what this book is about.

“It’s all about getting together as a family and all those fun and silly questions kids ask.

“I think it’s a book that almost anyone can relate to over the holiday season.”
