Federal Conservative candidate Larry Maguire, who has represented the riding of Brandon-Souris for more than a decade, announced on the first day of the federal election race that he won’t run.
“The responsibility of representing the people of Brandon-Souris as the Member of Parliament for the past 11 years, as well as the 14 years prior to that as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Arthur-Virden, apart from my partner, family, and my 33-year farming career, has been the most fulfilling highlight of my life,” noted Maguire in a statement on March 23.
“However, today I am announcing that I will not seek re-election in Brandon-Souris. The decision is based on being recently informed of a concerning health condition that may prevent me from participating in some of all of the campaign and could impede my ability to give my full attention in the future.”
Maguire was first elected in the riding during a November 2013 by-election after former Conservative MP Merv Tweed resigned from the post after being elected chair of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food. Maguire would go on to win the next three elections.
The 75-year-old Maguire reflected on several accomplishments made during his time as an MP, including securing federal funding for the Brandon airport, building flood protection in many communities, and the investment in the 18th St. Bridge (the Daly Overpass) in Brandon.
During the 43rd Canadian Parliament, Maguire introduced Bill C-208, amending the Income Tax Act, which was adopted in early 2020. That bill would see capital gains tax applied to inter-generational transfers of corporations classed as small businesses, instead of dividend tax. Prior to Maguire’s bill, it was financially smarter for a business owner to sell to a third party rather than to a family member from a tax outlook.
“I have always carefully considered the energy and effort that these responsibilities require, and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with my staff on your behalf in every corner of our great constituency,” Maguire noted. “As I step away, I feel incredibly blessed and offer my sincere blessings to all.”
