The Maryfield Agriculture Society held their annual Maryfield Fair on July 26, as they have every summer for more than 100 years.

There were many events and activities for young families and entertainment for all.

Charlotte Kovach, a member of the Maryfield Agriculture Society, has been attending the fair ever since she was a young girl and has volunteered her time helping organize the fair for many years now.

“I was born and raised two and a half miles west of Maryfield. My grandpa, George Bochek, was one of the first people here when it was still the Northwest Territories. He helped build some of the places in town and hauled the stones for the Anglican Church that was in town.”

Kovach grew up in Maryfield and her family was very involved in the community.

“Maryfield has always been home. My grandpa Bochek had an orchard of apples, plums, and cherries. He had raspberry and strawberry patches and sold the fruit to the community, so I was always busy in the summer time because there was always strawberries, raspberries, and apples to pick and bring to town. I also belonged to the 4-H club here for seven years and I have always liked music. I enjoy singing.”

Kovach says her family has been a part of the agriculture society for three generations.

“I am a third generation agriculture society member. My grandpa was part of the agriculture society years and years ago when it started, and I just carried on the tradition. For 30 years I lived away from Maryfield and wasn’t able to give anything back to the community so when we retired in 2001, then I started doing the odd thing and became more involved with the agriculture society. My dad, Cliff Bochek was very much involved especially with bringing horses to the fair. He was very involved in the community so I just always thought I would help in any way I could one day too.”

The Maryfield Fair has been an event that has attracted people to Maryfield and the area for more than a century.

“This is the 109th year for the Maryfield Fair,” Kovach said. “I have been attending the fair ever since I was a child. I have been a director for the fair for 16 years and before that I would enter the odd thing for the fair.”

She says the agriculture society looks after hosting the fair each year.

“My generation, the older generation, and the young people are very involved with the fair. The agriculture society gets together and we have different roles to look after to organize the fair.”

Kovach says the fair is an important historical event Maryfield continues to hold. “This is the biggest event the agriculture society in Maryfield puts on every year. We want to continue to see the fair happen so we look after the planning and everything so we can still have it because the fair has been an exciting event in town for many years.

“It is a fun event in Maryfield and always has been. I hope it can continue to happen so we can enjoy it with the younger generation.”
