On May 4, the The Sisters Of The Holy Rock will be performing in Moosomin. The show is a fundraiser for the Huntington Society of Canada.

The origins of this production can find its roots in the successful 1992 movie, “Sister Act” starring Woopie Goldberg.

The driving force behind the upcoming performances is Barbara Dennis of Wawota, whose family has a long history Huntingtons Disease. She decided to contact the Winnipeg production company that does The Sisters of the Holy Rock show to put on their show in Moosomin in order to raise the awareness and to fundraise for disease research.

Barbara is hoping for strong community support for the event.

Huntingtons Disease takes away the normal life activities of people in the age range of 30 to 40, with no known cure. There have even been some reported cases in children too. For the most part the disease is an inherited disorder causing the brain’s nerve cells to break down and die.

The major effects of this disease are the lost of control of voluntary movements of the legs and arms and other bodily functions. It can result in mood swings and other mental problems. At this time, there are some prescription medicines available that can help control some of the physical symptoms, but sadly the mental and behavioral problems will continue without known medications. The involuntary movement, cognitive disease and neuroses cognitive mood swings, will destroy most of an individual’s quality of life.

The all female cast of the Sisters of the Holy Rock is made up of all ages, with a regular cast of 75 people. However for road shows they have a cast of 30.

Show time is Sunday, May 4 at 2 pm at the Moosomin Convention Centre. Tickets are available at Moosomin and Wawota branches of Conexus Credit Union or by calling 306-575-9498 or 306-577-9511.
