Several construction projects are under way in the RM of Moosomin development just east of town. In the foreground is the new RM shop, beyond that is the site of the Johnston’s Grain building, beyond that is Mantl’s building, and beyond that is Sunny Transport. There are still three lots available in the development.

Justin Young of Nutrien will be the guest speaker at the September 19 meeting of the Moosomin Chamber of Commerce. Young became the General Manager at Nutrien Rocanville earlier this year.

The Nutrien Rocanville mine is a major employer in the area, with about 900 employees.

Rocanville is the largest potash mine in Nutrien’s system and has some of the largest potash reserves in Canada having estimated reserves of 1.13 billion tonnes of ore.

Economic Development report
Also at the September 19 Chamber meeting, Moosomin Economic Development Officer Casey McCormac will provide an update on some of the projects she is working on, from housing to new businesses to health care.

She has been working on a housing accellerator project application to spur residential development, has been working with the Southeast Recovery Centre on a proposal for addictions treatment in the Moosomin area, and has also been working with the Moosomin Visual Arts Centre as it works on securing a facility. She is working on a business plan for the group.

She worked on Communities in Bloom this summer, and helped create a booklet for Communities in Bloom that can also be used for other economic development initiatives.

She has worked with new businesses such as UFA, which is working on developing a new bulk fuel and cardlock in Moosomin.

She has also been gathering population stats for Moosomin and other communities like Estevan, Humboldt, Melfort, and Assiniboia to compare trading area populations. The stats show that Moosomin has a larger population within 100 km than many larger communities.

Gift card fundraiser
The MacLeod School Community Council will make a presentation on their gift card fundraiser.

The SCC sells gift cards to local businesses, and each business donates back a portion of sales to the SCC. Last year the SCC sold more than $117,000 worth of gift cards.

Spookarama
The Spookarama committee will present plans for the Halloween dance for Moosomin high school students. The dance is on Halloween night, and is intended to give high school age youth something to do on Halloween.

Cobblestone House
Cobblestone House will make a presentation at the September Chamber of Commerce meeting on their upcoming grand opening.

The September Chamber meeting is at 11:45 am on Tuesday, September 19 at the Canalta Hotel meeting room. Lunch is provided and everyone is welcome.
