Longtime Moosomin MLA and former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Don Toth has endorsed Moosomin’s Kevin Weedmark in his run to be the Saskatchewan Party candidate in Moosomin-Montmartre.

Toth represented Moosomin the the Legislative Assembly for 30 years, from 1986 to 2016. He served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly in the first term of the Brad Wall government. “I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Kevin over the years, especially during my years as an MLA,” Toth said.

“In fact whenever I’m in Moosomin I still take a moment to drop by and see how things are going,” said Toth.

“Kevin is a community person. I’ve noted his involvement in many community endeavours.

“While many local papers are struggling or closing there doors, he has continued to put out an award winning newspaper. I’ve been impressed not only with the quality of information the World Spectator includes, but with the fact that Kevin and staff have included information from and about many community endeavours in surrounding communities.

“Kevin is also aware of the economic engine that fuels our economy as he continues to remind us of the important role Agriculture, mining and oil and gas play in our area as well as the province.

“I believe Kevin will be an affective voice in the Legislative Assembly of our province and will represent the constituency of Moosomin well as an MLA.”

Weedmark said he welcomed the endorsement of the former longtime Moosomin MLA.

“Don Toth is someone I have great respect for.” he said. “He was respected by people from all sides throughout his career, and always carried himself with dignity. To have his support means a lot to me.

“I’m encouraged by the support I have had from people across the constituency. It’s great to hear such strong support from so many people, but to hear those words of support from someone like Don Toth, with his unimpeachable reputation, really means a lot.

The Moosomin-Montmartre nominating meeting is coming up Tuesday, September 10 at 6 pm at the Grenfell Community Hall.

In addition to Weedmark, two candidates from outside the riding are seeking the nomination.

To vote, individuals must live in the constituency, must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, and must be 14 or older.

Weedmark is the president of the Moosomin Chamber of Commerce, chair of the Moosomin Housing Authority, a member of the Moosomin Economic Development Committee, and a member of the Community Builders Alliance.

He is the long-time owner and publisher of the Moosomin World-Spectator, Plain & Valley and Ag News. Weedmark has been an active member of the community in the Moosomin region for over 35 years.

Weedmark has a long history of serving his community. In his role with the World-Spectator, he has spent many hours interviewing federal, provincial, and municipal politicians about issues that concern the Moosomin region.

Most recently he has advocated for the Moosomin Airport Expansion, which has allowed for the Saskatchewan Air Ambulance to land in Moosomin and expand health care services.

He has spent time reporting overseas in Afghanistan, Vietnam and the Philippines, working with the Canadian government.

“I have the skills and the experience to be an effective MLA,” says Weedmark. “As owner and editor of the World-Spectator and my other roles in the region, I have made contacts at all levels of government and have been effective at uniting the community behind important projects and issues, and motivating government to act on and solve issues.”
