Douglas McLeod, beloved husband of Dianne, loving father of Nancy (Jeff) and Jane and grandpa of Jack, passed away at the Southeast Integrated Care Centre, Long Term Care, Moosomin, Saskatchewan, on Sunday, September 11, 2022 at the age of 82 years.

Doug was born on May 16, 1940, to Malcolm and Marjorie McLeod and grew up on the family farm with his siblings Peggy, Robert, and Barbara.

Doug graduated from Langbank High School.

Aside from a brief stint working on the oil rigs, he spent most of his adult life farming.

Doug was a passionate farmer, he loved the land, working for himself and he derived a lot of pleasure in fixing things. He would take something apart and almost all the time be able to put it back together in perfect working order.

Doug took flying lessons, obtained his pilot’s licence and for a time partially owned and flew a Cessna in partnership with Donald Dean and Bill Dean.

Doug was active in community sports, he played ball with the Langbank Canadians, hockey with the Kennedy Wranglers, and he curled for most of his life. He was even a member of the Brookside Square Dance Club!

Doug married Dianne Dean on December 23, 1972, and they had two daughters, Nancy, and Jane.

Doug was an amazing husband and father and always made time for his family, whether it was going on trips, cleaning someone’s vehicle, working band lunches, driving a daughter to Regina for night classes or providing unwavering support.

Nancy and Jane came to count on a daily phone call from Dad “just checking in,” which is something that is very missed.

Doug was an avid reader and enjoyed historical documentaries which led to some great conversations.

Doug had a wicked sense of humor and enjoyed a funny story or joke.

He loved having a good visit with his family, friends, and neighbours.

He liked morning coffee at the elevator and would also stop by to drop off the paper and have a daily coffee with his sister Barbara.

Doug retired from farming in 2009 and he and Dianne took to winters in Mesa, Arizona where they enjoyed the sun and heat.

In 2016 they moved into Moosomin which was a tough move for Doug as he loved the farm, but he ended up enjoying his new community and the companionship of the folks in Pipestone Villas.

Doug then moved into Moosomin Long Term Care on June 24, 2020, when his dementia developed to a stage that required full time care.

He received excellent care and attention for the rest of his days.

Doug is survived by his wife, Dianne, his daughters, Jane McLeod, and Nancy (Jeff) Fraser and his grandson Jack Fraser; his brother Robert (Olive) McLeod.

He is also survived by his sister-in-laws, Beth (John) Bratton, Joan Baldwin, Barbara (Calvin) Raffey, Edie Laidlaw, and brother-in-law Garry (Chris) Bruce and a number of loved nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents Malcolm and Marjorie and his sisters Barbara Bruce, Peggy Stansbury and brothers-in-law Dan Baldwin and Bob Laidlaw.

The funeral service at Bethel United Church was on Friday, September 16 with Rev. Barbara Wilkins officiating.

If friends so desire, In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the Moosomin and District Healthcare Foundation for the CT Scanner Fund or the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of Doug.
