Violet Mae McMillan passed away peacefully Monday, December 12, 2022, in Edmonton, Alberta, at the age of 90.

She fought like a true Saskatchewan farm girl, but in the end her battle with Alzheimers and a recent fall proved too much.

Vi was born to Lula and Alvin Dixon on September 5, 1932, in Rocanville, Saskatchewan.

She grew up with her siblings, Norma, Raymond, Orland, and Gordon, on the family farm and attended school at Hillburn Country School and Whitewood High School.

She was working as a telephone operator in Grenfell when she met her future husband, Doug McMillan. They were married in 1954 and moved to Regina to start their family.

Vi managed their growing family as Doug’s profession as a civil engineer with the Saskatchewan Department of Highways took off.

Moves to North Battleford and finally Prince Albert followed.

Together, Vi and Doug had five children and created a wonderful home in Prince Albert.

After her husband Doug’s passing and 33 years in Prince Albert, Vi moved to Edmonton to be closer to family.

Vi was a skilled artist. Many of her lovely landscapes hang in the homes of her family and extended family. Her talent as an artist has been passed on, in varying degrees, to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was a great cook, gardener, and tailor. Much to her children’s dismay, she was sewing their clothes well into junior high school.

She was a good bowler and a bad golfer. She was active in the community through Brownies, Girl Guides, and CGIT.

She was also very involved in her church and enjoyed being a member of the UCW women’s group for many years.

Vi was predeceased by her husband, Doug; daughter, Joanne; and son-in-law, Tom. She leaves to mourn her passing: children, Bill (Dawn), Laura, Janie (Stan), Steven (Laura); grandchildren, Chad (Sarah), Jana (Justin), Matt, Jocelyn, Robyn (Shawn), Erin (Marvin), Brett (Hannah), Sophie, Anna, Claire, Chance; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Joelle, Braydon, Madison, Brooklyn, Mackenzie, Benjamin; brother, Gordon (Audrey); and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private interment will be held at the McMillan family plot in Saskatoon in 2023.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Vi’s honour to Adopt-A-Teen Edmonton or the Edmonton Food Bank.
