On September 23, 2025, with the sounds and smell of fall in the air and under the distant gentle hum of combines, Edward Martin finished his last harvest with his family by his side.

Edward was born on September 7, 1931, at SE5-14-28W1 in the Willen District to Thomas and Isabella Martin being the fourth of six children, later moving to NE5-14-28W1. He attended Jeffrey and Roselea country schools. After losing his father at the age of 14, Edward, along with his older brother Thomas, continued to run the farm. Ed married Margaret Cowan in 1953 and in 1958 they moved to SW30-11-28W1 southwest of Elkhorn where they raised three girls. They built a new house in 1964 with the luxuries of electricity and, most importantly, indoor plumbing!

Edward farmed all his life raising pigs, chickens, beef cattle and milking cows as well as growing a variety of crops, including his large potato patch! He had a love for animals with many cows being named and becoming pets, along with a dog always by his side—usually a German Shepherd. He started out using horses and eventually progressed to modern machinery. Ed could fix anything from machinery to animals, plumbing and electrical, and even little girls’ scraped knees. He had the unique ability to witch for water using wires or a willow stick and witched countless wells for many people across the countryside, always with success! He loved to dance and was very smooth on the dance floor with Margaret as his partner. Ed and Margaret sold the farm in 2014 and moved into a new house in Elkhorn, Manitoba. Due to declining health, Ed moved into the Elkwood Manor in the fall of 2024.

“Fast Eddie” was a southpaw pitcher for the Elkhorn men’s fastball team and curled in many bonspiels with his friends, winning lots of trophies. Known as “One Shot Ed,” he enjoyed hunting deer and loved fishing, catching a master angler walleye.

Eddie and Margaret travelled in their 5th wheel trailer from coast to coast including to Alaska, many country music festivals and fishing trips, making many friends along the way. They also enjoyed a trip to Florida and several bus tours. They celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary in 2025.

With a legacy of 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, his wisdom, kindness, wit, quiet sense of humor and love of the land will continue. He will be missed immensely by his wife, daughters, son-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was laid to rest in a private ceremony at Elkhorn cemetery.

The family would like to thank Dr. Crouse for his many years of care, the staff and residents of the Elkwood Manor for their care and companionship, Sam for the beautiful floral spray, Marilyn Warkentine for officiating and Carscadden’s for the arrangements. Thank you to everyone who sent food, flowers, cards, donations, made visits, and for the hugs and kind enquiries. It was all greatly appreciated and made a difficult time a little easier.
