
On Thursday, June 26, 2014 at the Moosomin long-term care facility, Janet (Meikle) Montgomery, aged 95 years, died peacefully.
Janet was born on September 17, 1918 in Edinburgh, Scotland. She grew up in Ormiston, Scotland with her mother and dad and five sisters and three brothers. Janet’s dad, John, worked in a coal pit. They all came to Canada in 1926 on the ship "Montrose" except for one sister, Mary, who stayed in Scotland and married a British soldier.
The family arrived in Fairlight, Sask. on April 1, 1926. Janet’s parents left the farm and retired to Selkirk, Man.
Janet married Albert "Abbie" Montgomery from Maryfield, in the Presbyterian Church in Selkirk in 1952. They lived on the Montgomery farm by the Pipestone Creek and retired to the town of Maryfield in 1978. Albert died at the age of 91 in 2003.
Janet was predeceased by all her siblings: Sisters Catherine, Margaret, Elizabeth and Mary and her brothers, Jim, Alex and Bill. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service was held in St. Andrew’s United Church in Maryfield on July 2, 2014. Pallbearers were Florence Edmonds, Dana Edmonds, Monty Meikle, Gail O’Greysik, Karen Kent, Jodi Montgomery and Joan Montgomery. Rev. Roy Bortolotto presided. Carscadden Funeral Chapels were in charge of arrangements.
