Donelda "Donnie" was born in Antler, Saskatchewan on November 30, 1924, the second daughter of Arthur and Margaret Merrill.
Bill and Donnie married on August 17, 1946. Together Bill and Donnie celebrated 65 years of marriage and raised two sons, Bob and Allen, in Maryfield. She taught at Prairie Bell School and during this time met and married William (Bill) and they moved to Maryfield.
Donnie was active in curling, participating in many bonspiels in the surrounding communities. She was involved in the curling executive.
Whenever asked she was a willing baker for the many functions and organizations in Maryfield. She was a hostess in her home and enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends.
Donnie also enjoyed gardening and caring for her many flowers each summer.
She had a particular talent for finding four-leaf clovers and managed to spot them in the grass when others failed to spot the elusive prize.
Donnie also found great pleasure in working on crossword puzzles and knitting for her family. She also loved to watch the hummingbirds that gathered by her front window. Coffee parties with her block partners were cherished activities. She also thoroughly enjoyed her Roughrider and Blue Jay games on television.
Donnie was predeceased by her husband and love of her life Bill in December of 2011; her parents Arthur and Margaret; her sister Mary Joan and brother-in-law Everett.
She will be missed and lovingly remembered by her sons Bob (Judi) of Medicine Hat, and Allen (Mary Anne) of Emerald Park; five grandchildren: Paul (Courtney), Robert (Janelle), Melissa, Krista (Trevor) Baragar, Kim (Mike) Gibney; eight great-grandchildren: Jonah Melenchuk, Bergen Melenchuk; Nolan, Emre, Madilyn and Francis Baragar; and Sam and Sofia Gibney.
A graveside funeral service was held at Maryfield cemetery on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 2 p.m. with Roy Bortolotto officiating.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to St. Andrew’s United Church or to Sunrise Villa, Maryfield, in memory of Donnie.
