Lorne Douglas McCorriston was born on June 25, 1943 to Wellington and Hertha McCorriston, along with his identical twin Larry, in Tisdale, Saskatchewan. The family consisted of four brothers. They lived on a farm near Armley, Saskatchewan. Lorne attended Manluis School from Grades 1 to 8, then attended the Tisdale Unit Composite High School, graduating in 1961. In the fall of the same year, he enrolled at the Saskatoon Teachers College and received his teaching certificate.

Lorne knew he needed more education to continue his career as a teacher. University was costly, so during the next nine years he either worked teaching, on road construction or attended the University of Saskatchewan to obtain both his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees.

In 1969, Lorne accepted a position teaching English at McNaughton High School. While in Moosomin, he met Joy and they were married in August 1970. Lorne continued teaching in Moosomin for one more year then they moved to Reston, Manitoba to teach. Their first child, Scott, was born in Reston in 1974. They continued in Reston until 1976 when Lorne purchased 1,200 acres of land near Moosomin and began to farm full time. Joy was pleased to move back to Moosomin, close to her family.

Lorne knew diversification was key to success, so he started in both Charolais cattle and grain farming. In the first few years of farming, Lorne took a couple of teaching jobs and sold Blanchard products to supplement his income. Lorne worked hard and long hours. In 1979, a second son, Mark was born, followed by a daughter, Joanne that completed the family in 1981. Joy was Lorne’s right hand on the farm for many years, but as the boys grew they soon helped their father on the farm. Lorne was very proud of their children and what they have gone on to accomplish.

In the later ‘90s, Lorne cut back in the cattle and enlarged the grain land, as his boys showed more interest in grain farming. In 2005, the cattle were completely dispersed and in 2006 Joy retired from teaching. This allowed for more time to travel with friends and family in the winter.

Lorne continued to expand the grain farm until 2014 when he decided to retire. In 2015 Lorne and Joy moved into a new home in Moosomin, travelled to Los Angeles with family, went on an Alaskan cruise, enjoyed granddaughter Mackenzie’s grade 12 graduation, enjoyed time at the cottage at Moosomin Lake, hauled out grain, helped Mark with his farming operation, attended Hostfest in Minot, and made a final trip to Branson, Missouri.

Lorne will be remembered for his high moral character and strong work ethic. He treasured his role as grandfather and enjoyed sharing in each stage of their lives. Lorne will also be remembered for his love of food, especially sweets. Lorne enjoyed watching news and sports on TV, especially the Maple Leafs, the Blue Jays and the Riders. Lorne also enjoyed coffee time with friends at the coffee shop.

Lorne passed away peacefully with family by his side in Minot, North Dakota, on his way home from a great trip to Branson, Missouri.

Predeceased by his parents Wellington and Hertha
McCorriston and twin brother Larry, Lorne is survived by his wife Joy; children Scott (Rachelle), Mark (Amy),
and Joanne (Ryley); grandchildren Taylor (Paige), Mackenzie, Ainsley and Jase; brothers Earl (Betty) and Harry (Eileen); sister-in-law Jeanne McCorriston; and his many nieces, nephews, extended families and friends.

On Joy’s side of the family Lorne is predeceased by
Albert and Rose Young; Diane and Estel Jensen; Sharon Young and David Young; and he is survived by Alex (Elaine) Young, Linda (Alex) Bene, Stan (Lynn) Jensen; and Joy’s many nieces, nephews, extended families and friends.

A service of remembrance was held on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 2 p.m. in the Moosomin Baptist Church with Rev. Mel Konkel officiating. A private interment followed at Spring Creek cemetery at St. Peters.

If so inclined, memorial tributes may be made to either the Parish of Saskatchewan Gateway (designate “Spring Creek Cemetery”) at Box 604 in Moosomin or the Moosomin Baptist Church, Box 57 in Moosomin.
