Peacefully on Thursday, October 7, 2021 Mame passed away at Souris Health Centre, Souris, Manitoba at the age of 96 years. Mamie Grant (nee Hill) was born in Rorketon, Man., the second daughter and fourth child of seven.

Her parents John and Ellen Kontinen (Hill) immigrated from Finland to the U.S., and then Canada in 1914. She flew to Heathrow Airport and then Helsinki to visit her mother’s relatives and tour the home of her parents, with her sister Aune (Hill) Gajerski, in 1988.

She graduated from Normal School, in Winnipeg, and began her teaching career. She taught during her first year near Hayland at a one room school, then from 1947 to 1949, at Mossgiel school near Elkhorn, where she met her future husband, Alex Grant. They were married in April 1949 at the Manse in Elkhorn. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their new home in Virden, in 1999.

Alex and Mame had two children, Linda Louise Grant born in 1950 and John Grant in 1958.

Mame had a way of making people feel special, and treated visitors to her delicious baked cookies and pies. She always loved a good visit and conversation, where she enjoyed offering coffee, lunches or dinner if visitors arrived at those time.

She was a strong supporter of good education. When her mother left for Canada, a schoolhouse was being constructed near their home, in Finland for the neighbour’s children. When Mame and her sister visited their mother’s home, they made sure to go to the schoolhouse to see it and visit the teacher. They were quite impressed.

Mame was predeceased by her sister Aune Gajerski, brothers Roy, Vilhd, Aimo, Melvin, Melfort, sister-in-law Gladys Gilchrist, her son John Grant in a tragic truck accident on the road to Elkhorn in 1975, her husband Alex Grant in 2001, and her daughter Linda Grant-Braybrook in 2019.

She is survived by and will be cherished in the hearts of her sister-in-law Ann (Roy) Hill, her nieces, nephews and their children and grandchildren, and friends.

A private graveside service will take place on a nice warm spring day next year. Interment will be in Elkhorn Cemetery.

For those who so desire, memorial tributes may be made to S.A.I.L.—P.O. Box 1984 Virden, Manitoba R0M 2C0 in memory of Mame.
