Broadview RCMP has received multiple calls today with regards to people being scammed in our communities involving lotteries, draws, and prizes. The latest victims of this scam have lost nearly $20,000 and $2,500.

Local communities are receiving more and more scam calls as of late. RCMP are aware; however, we have some tips to help you determine whether or not you’re being scammed:

DO NOT ever provide any personal information over the phone (credit card numbers, social insurance numbers, bank account information, etc.)

If you’ve never bought a ticket for a lottery/draw, and someone is calling advising you won, you have not won anything, DO NOT provide any information to the caller.

If someone is advising you won a prize, but is requesting in order to claim your prize you must send money or gift cards, this is a scam. DO NOT send what they are requesting. If you truly win something, you may be contacted, but you will never be asked to pay for the prize.

Also don’t be fooled by scammers transferring money into your account this money will be clawed back by the bank once the banks realizes it is fraudulent.

If you or someone you know has received these types of calls, or anything similar, please hang up and block the number then report to the Canadian Anti Fraud at 1-888-495-8501. You can also call your local RCMP Detachment and they will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
