Jill Jones with Playfair Daycare gave a presentation to Moosomin Chamber members at their meeting on Tuesday, updating them on progress on a second daycare that is being built in Moosomin.

The new daycare is over 12,000 square feet, and will accommodate 90 children. Jones said sod could turn on the building this fall, and they will likely be going to tender this spring or summer.

“Our estimates right now are coming in at that $4.5 to $5 million range to get it up and running,” she said.

“To date we’ve got $1.3 million from the government. We’ve raised another $300,000 internally. So you are going to get sick of hearing us and seeing us out in the community, but it’s what we love and we are going to keep pushing forward with different fundraisers and probably be knocking on everyone’s door to have a chat and make sure everyone understands the project and the benefits that it can bring to the community.

“Our construction plan right now looks like spring into summer we will be going to tender, and then come the fall, hopefully we will be turning some dirt and starting construction so people can get some tangible evidence of this building going up.

“Props to the committee we put together for this. We are spending a lot of time in the design phase ensuring that what we are building is cost effective and is really going to stand the test of time. We are learning from our old building things that we would tweak and ways to make it better, so we are incorporating it all into a great building.

“The other thing you may have heard in the community, there was that BASF grant that was going around. We are happy to report that Playfair Daycare was the first place winner of that one, so we will receive a $25,000 donation. And to do the cheque presentation, they want to do a community barbecue or community event. So we are just working on the details with them on that and we are really excited to thank everyone for the time they spent voting or spreading the word on that.”

Jones says the committee is sitting at around $1.7 million raised so far and is “in the exploration phase of coming up with that differential” in order to see construction go ahead.”

The daycare will accommodate children from infant to pre-school age, and have an area specially for pre-school and kids college as well as any after school programs that they run.”

Jones says they will be talking to the businesses in Moosomin about donations, and are actively coming up with fundraising ideas as well within their board.
