11 lifeguards hired for aquatic centre

At their meeting on Wednesday, Rocanville town council passed a motion to hire 11 lifeguards for the Universe Satellite Aquatic Centre, which will be opening very soon, as its refurbishment is nearly complete.

The town has hired six junior lifeguards, two senior lifeguards, and three senior instructor guards.

This brings the pool close to full staffing levels for lifeguards, with the town still open to accepting some applications for daytime staff.

Eco centre grand opening planned for Friday, November 28
The town will be holding a grand opening of its new eco centre at the transfer station in the afternoon on Friday, November 28, letting people know that they can recycle used oil during regular transfer station hourse.

Used oil can be dropped off at that location, and anyone in the region can use the recycling centre, not just Rocanville residents.

Previously, an eco centre was located at the Kin Ability Centre in Moosomin, however when the Kin Ability decided they could no longer manage the eco centre, Saskatchewan Association for Resource Recovery Corp (SARRC) began looking for a new location in the area and approached the town of Rocanville who decided to take it on.

SARRC has a province-wide collection network of nearly 130 collection points and eco centres in communities that accept used oil, used oil filters, used antifreeze, antifreeze and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) containers.

Development permit for residential properties approved
Council approved a development permit for residential housing at 216 Pelly Street. The property was a tax enforcement property. A purchaser approached the town about buying the land and will be building two residential units on the lot.

New HR policy approved
The town passed a motion for a progressive discipline policy. The new HR policy applies to anyone employed by the town of Rocanville.

“It’s just to be more consistent,” says administrator Tanya Strandlund. “It makes everything clear as to expectations and repercussions and to have a consistent process for any sort of issues.”

Roto rooting cost covered
The town passed a motion to refund 100 per cent of the cost of having tree roots roto rooted in a sewer line at 316 Fort Street. The town covers the costs of any sewer line issues with roots 20 feet out from the house.

Housing authority share
The town of Rocanville’s five per cent share to the Sask Housing Corporation for operation of the Rocanville Housing Authority in 2024 is $554.93—lower than what the town had budgeted, which was $5,000.

Tankless water heating system for rink
Council passed a motion to approve a tankless water heating system to be installed by Tag’s Plumbing and Heating in the zamboni room at the rink.

TD pool savings account closed
The town passed a motion to close their pool savings account with the TD Bank. The TD bank closed its branch in Rocanville and the town has moved their account to Conexus Credit Union instead.
