In Wawota, Mayor Kevin Kay retains his seat after being challenged by Shawn Murray. There were also 10 candidates vying for six seats on council, with four of the elected councillors new to council.

“Wawota is a great town to be mayor of,” Kay said. “This is a great community, and I’m more than honoured to be able to represent it as mayor. This year in talking to other municipalities, it was either feast or famine about people running. I was really pleased to see the number of people running for council here in Wawota.”

Returning to council are Allan Bunz and Dwayn Linder, with new faces Joel Carpenter, Nolan Murray, Brandon Harper, and Marley Drumm.

Community growth and expansion are not only topics of interest, but also already happening in Wawota, with Kay excited about a couple big projects happening in the near future in the community.

“The one project that I’m most excited about is the sewer lift that we’re doing,” he explained. “I’m not exactly sure it’s one of the projects that you want to get excited about, but a sewer lift is a big deal for our community. Getting that project up and running and getting that completed is going to be huge for Wawota.”

The lift being replaced has been “on its last legs for the last few years,” Kay noted.

“To be able to get the grant funding, and now to get the project started within the next year or two will be fantastic,” he said.
