During the April 27 to May 3 Smile Cookie fundraising campaign, the Esterhazy Tim Hortons will be fundraising for the Esterhazy High School breakfast program.
“The EHS breakfast program serves between 50 and 60 students Monday to Friday,” says Kelly Walker, one of the teachers who organizes and leads the new breakfast program.
“We started in December with a grant from our federal government. After seeing the need for a program in our school, we realized we needed a bit of help with fundraising to keep this free program up and running for our students.”
The Smile Cookie campaign is one way to gain some funding to maintain an important program for the school. Breakfast consists of yogurt, meat protein (sausages, bacon, etc.), eggs, egg sandwiches, cereal, toast, and homemade muffins. The Commercial Cooking and Grade 8 PAA classes help with baking muffins, egg sandwiches, french toast, biscuits and pancakes while the teachers set it up and prepare it each morning.
“The breakfast program has created a great sense of community within our school. Students are nourished and ready to start their day, not being hungry,” says Walker.
The hope is that the program may continue indefinitely, but it will require fundraising efforts and continued donations to maintain. There has been some support from community donations, however Walker says the Smile Cookie campaign will help continue to buy groceries and offer free breakfast to many appreciative students each morning.
