At the Moosomin Town Council meeting on Wednesday, Rec Director Mike Schwean told council that planning is underway for a Sporstman Dinner in Moosomin that would be a fundraiser for upgrades ato the Mike Schwean Arena.
He said TSN’s Brit Dort has agreed to MC the event, and he listed a number of other athletes—some local—that have agreed and some that he is talking to about coming to the event.
He said he should be able to pick a date soon for the supper.
Lots of Minor Ball teams
As part of his rec report, Rec Director Mike Schwean reported that there are 22 teams registered to play Minor Ball this season in Moosomin.
Public works report
As part of the public works report, Town Foreman Mike Stein told council that the sweeper has been out and about for its first pass at cleaning streets.
He also said that all seven bins at the new transfer station are full after only two weeks. The town agreed to add two more bins to the transfer station.
This led to a discussion about landfill rates, with some large loads going out to the transfer station and filling up the bins quickly. Council will be reviewing rates as part of their budgeting process.
Stein also asked what the town wants to do in terms of compost. He said under Sask Environment rules, any permanent compost area would require a clay liner and water testing, and the town’s new transfer station is not set up to host a permanent compost area.
However a temporary compost area can be set up as long as the compost is moved after 72 hours into one of the bins at the transfer station.
Council decided to set up a temporary compost area.
Lagoon survey
Council passed a motion to hire Hydra Survey for $10,981 to survey the town’s lagoon to determine the depths of the sludge in the lagoon so that the town can get a quote on what it will cost to dredge the lagoon.
No change to education property tax mill rates
Council passed a motion to accept the education property tax mill rates for 2026. There are no changes to the mill rates from last year, with agricultural property remaining at 1.07 mills, residential property remaining at 4.27 mills, commercial and industrial property remaining at 6.37 mills, and resource property remaining at 7.49 mills.
Temporary back alley closure
Council passed a motion to allow for the temporary closure of the back alley behind the Moosomin Baptist Church on September 12 from 10 am to 4 pm for a 140th anniversary celebration that day.
Cook Road lot sold
Council passed a motion to sell a residential lot at 311 Cook Road for $50,000 plus GST, land and transfer fees. The lot is the last one located in the area where the old hospital used to be. The owner has until December 31, 2027 to construct a home on the property.
Town approves EOI for Build Communities Strong fund
Council passed a motion to hire Grant Match to apply for the Build Communities Strong Fund, a federal grant that Rec Director Mike Schwean said could be used to assist with upgrades at the Mike Schwean arena if the town is successful in securing a grant.
Schwean said Hockey Canada has identified aging rink infrastructure across Canada as a serious issue and has approached the federal government about helping out with costs.
Schwean held a meeting with Hockey Canada, and afterwards they suggested the town of Moosomin apply for this particular grant.
Grant Match will proceed with an Expression of Interest on behalf of the town of Moosomin.
Town agrees to share cost on ball diamond upgrades
Council passed a motion to share some of the costs of doing upgrades to Legacy Field at Bradley Park, with the majority of the upgrades being covered Bob and Rose Mullett. The town would cover the costs of shale and landscaping, while the Mulletts would cover the cost of reducing it to a regulation size Bantam ball field, new fencing, new dugouts, and a sound system.
