Terry Lynd Court is now open. Jeff Skulmoski and Leo Ilustrismo gave an update on the new Basketball Court at the Moosomin Chamber of Commerce meeting last Tuesday.
“Anyone that has driven by can see where we are at with the court. It is moving along quite well, we are ahead of schedule.” Said Skulmoski.
“If you look at our funding, we are slightly behind.
“Our original goal of funding, we were looking for $120,000. We are very close to that. The reason we are over is because our dollar, tariffs and things like that, but mostly it was because we decided to go with higher quality products,“ said Skulmoski.
“One of them being the asphalt. We were recommended 2 inches, we went with 3 inches, which increased the price.
“The hoops; we went with the best you could buy. Anyone that has seen them has commented on them that they are really great. There was an import fee of $2,000 that we did not count on. We went with black powder-coated fencing, which increased the budget about $10,000, but we wanted good quality.
“There are two extra senior hoops we need to sell. We ordered them but they are too big for our junior court, and we need to sell those off somewhere and we are actively looking for a buyer.
“The final project here, we weren’t originally planning on a junior court beside the senior court, but we have decided to do that to utilize the concrete pad.
“There is about $36,000 extra we weren’t originally budgeting on for our first court. We are going to actively fundraise and find donations for the rest of it to finish our project. Leo and I both agreed that we are going to finish it, we are going to raise the rest this summer to try to get finished. If anybody has any questions let me know,” said Skulmoski.
“I would like to thank everybody who has already donated to the project,” said Ilustrisumo.
“This is has been a combination of two years planning, fundraising, and then having the actual court being built. It is amazing. The coating will be ready for playing on Friday (last week), so stop by, walk it, have a feel of what we have done. We are a little bit over-budget, but most project are over budget. Time-wise, I think we did pretty well. Once the asphalt was laid down, it took a few weeks, and then everything was up. We just need to get our fences up, then we are ready to play official games there. We invite everybody.
“We plan to also put up signs for people who have helped and donated. I think we need just a bit more of a push and then we are on the finish line. We are here to give an update but also let people know that we are still needing a few funds,” said Ilustrisimo.
“We are planning a grand opening at some point in July,” said Skulmoski. “We are waiting for our fencing to get put up and then Leo is going to organize a basketball game, and we will get Terry Lynd out, and have grand opening at some point.”
