Bill Thorn is one of the organizers of the Walk for Alzheimer’s coming up in Moosomin this Saturday, May 25. After reading an article on how Alzheimer’s has affected the Thorn family, a family friend has anonymously donated $100,000 to the cause.

Donations have been coming in for Moosomin’s first Walk for Alzheimer’s, including one massive donation of $100,000.

Bill Thorn said an article in the World-Spectator has helped spread awareness of the disease and of the upcoming walk.

“You guys did an amazing article, and we have got a lot of support from people reading it in the paper. We sent that article to about 40 people we send Christmas cards to—people who were friends here and they’ve moved on. I think I’ve had 28 people get back from that and donate, and we’ve raised about $3,000 from that group. I know there are more coming. That doesn’t count the people here in town.

“The story was really well done and people have really responded to it. It really told our story well and I think people understand a lot better what living with Alzheimer’s is all about.

“A longtime family friend actually donated $100,000 to the Alzheimer Society after reading that story. It just blew me away. It’s hard to get your head around.”

He said support is coming in great for the Walk for Alzheimer’s.

“I think it’s gone very well. I think it’s going to be a very good day. The Alzheimer Society is just blown away.”

The Moosomin Walk for Alzheimer’s had a fundraising goal of $5,000, and has raised $5,406 so far in addition to the $100,000 donation.

Moosomin’s first Walk for Alzheimer’s is taking place this Saturday, May 25 at 10 am, starting from Cobblestone House.

“It’s something that came up out of the blue because a group of us were going to go to Regina for the Alzheimer’s Walk and then we thought why not do it here?” says Thorn.

Thorn said he is excited for the Moosomin Walk for Alzheimer’s. “I am pretty enthused about it,” he said. “I was just going to jump in a car to go to Regina which is the same day. But to have one right here in Moosomin I think will be very good. There are walks in Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Regina, Saskatoon, and Swift Current.”

“It is the first time in Moosomin though. I think it will be a good event.”

“It’s nice to be involved in an event like this where you can make a difference.”
